However, his stint as coach was always about more than just on-field results; he was also supposed to overhaul America’s talent base and install a more competitive playing style. And in those categories — essentially wearing the “technical director” hat, rather than that of “head coach” — Klinsmann acquitted himself more ably, a shift personified by 18-year-old rising star Christian Pulisic. Such improvements never sustained themselves on the pitch for Klinsmann — at least not in conjunction with his at-times bizarre tactical experimentation — and that’s why he’s no longer the U.S.’s coach. But his successor will probably be picking up the team in a better place than Klinsmann did back in 2011, despite what the rankings may say. Photo: UNBRundown roads, filled with potholes, appear to be becoming a distinguishing feature of Manikganj’s rural areas.Potholes, which pepper the roads, regularly cause severe traffic disruptions.Commuters and vehicle drivers told UNB that woes on the roads were nothing new but students, officer goers, and patients, in particular, suffered the most.Locals blamed public representatives and contractors for the situation but a parliamentarian faulted the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).It is estimated that dilapidated roads, covering some 100 kilometres, stretch across Manikganj’s seven upazilas. At least 20 newly-built or repaired roads in rural areas had been damaged within a year, with carpeting on most of them wearing off.LGED repaired 90km road in 2017-18 fiscal year with Tk 160 million. For the current fiscal, the government approved Tk 480 million for works on 167km road, including repair of 96km.Locals identified corruption and irregularities as key reasons for the sorry state of the roads. They accused the contractors of using low-quality materials during repairs, which left the roads vulnerable to damage.Manikganj-2 parliamentarian Momtaz Begum blamed the concerned authorities for the road conditions.“Supervising the repair work and taking care of the roads is the responsibility of the concerned department. The roads are not properly repaired because of their negligence,” she claimed.LGED executive engineer Naeema Najnin Naj said the repair works did not take place under her supervision. “I am not responsible for someone else’s alleged negligence,” she said, hoping to do a good job with the scheduled road repair.last_img read more

first_imgReading books is something I have been doing ever since I remember. I read all kind of books whatever I can lay my hands on, the historical ones, non-fiction, biographies or fantasy. But here is the catch, I read quite a few of them on my laptop or my e-reader.Honestly, I can’t understand the whole debate between the people who read books online (or digitally) and those who don’t. I’d rather have a discussion on what one should be munching on while reading a good book. Dessert, potato chips with garlic cheese dip or maybe a hot bowl of soup will do? Because it makes no difference, just like reading a book through whichever medium  you want! Books are to be enjoyed, to cry your heart out or to close it down with a good long sigh and a smile. According to an official statement, the MSC Opera was required to undergo repair works after it rammed into a dock in Venice’s Giudecca Canal on June 2. Though repairs were already completed on Monday, the ship is currently still waiting for authorities to give it the go ahead to sail.“As these procedures are taking a few days longer than originally expected, and we now know that the ship will not be able to depart in time for its next sailing, we have taken the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the upcoming cruise sailing from Bari on June 8, and from Venice on June 9,” said the cruise line.MSC Opera was due to host 2,451 guests from 53 countries on the cruise. MSC Cruises says it has informed passengers and travel agents about the cancellation, and is offering alternative options, including a full refund of the cruise fare and incurred travel expenses as well as any pre-booked services.
