first_imgMembers of Letterkenny RFC have today recalled with fondness the time they met tragic former All-Black star Jerry Collins in 2005.The world of Rugby is in mourning today following the tragic news that Jerry Collins and his wife Alana were killed in a road traffic accident in France.  Their three month-old daughter Ayla is in a critical condition in hospital.Collins was part of the New Zealand squad that visited Donegal to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ramelton native Dave Gallagher captaining New Zealand for the very first time in 1905.Gallagher was born in Ramelton in 1873, but is famously revered for becoming the first ever captain of New Zealand in 1905 during a tour of the British Isles. The All-Blacks squad visited Donegal to official unveil a plaque in Gallagher’s hometown of Ramelton in recognition of that momentous moment in New Zealand’s Rugby history. The New Zealand squad then officially opened the Dave Gallagher Park and Letterkenny RFC player Boyd Robinson fondly recalls that day.Boyd told Donegal Daily, “Jerry was a fantastic ambassador for the sport and he showed how great a character he was when he officially opened the Dave Gallagher Park here for us at Letterkenny RFC.“It was a big occasion for Donegal having these top-class athletes over here, but Jerry was just so down-to-earth and friendly.“He was so approachable to everyone and he was just an absolute gentleman of the highest order.“He was interacting with everyone of all ages and just completely immersed himself with everybody in attendance and he made it a great day for everybody.“He was a big character in that team, he was very funny and you could see how well respected he was by all his teammates. Boyd like everyone else this morning woke up to the sobering and shocking news of Jerry and his wife’s untimely death in a road traffic accident in France.“It’s absolutely dreadful news, we only met him for a short time but he made a big impression on everyone and I suppose that’s a testament to what kind of man he was.“He’s a huge loss to his family and friends and the world of Rugby has lost a great man.LETTERKENNY RFC RECALL FOND MEMORIES OF MEETING TRAGIC ALL-BLACK JERRY COLLINS was last modified: June 5th, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:All BlacksHome-page SportNew ZealandnewsRUGBYlast_img read more
