first_imgWith smartphones becoming a serious competitor in the portable games market, no one really expects a new handheld gaming device to be released unless it comes from a Nintendo or Sony. But it looks as though SNK Playmore has decided there’s room for another system, and it carries the Neo-Geo name. This is in no way an official announcement, but multiple images of a portable gaming device called the Neo-Geo Portable have leaked via the Japanese gaming blog Famicom-Plaza. It could be a prototype unit, or it could be the final hardware. It looks a lot like a fat iPhone from the side, but has the necessary face buttons and thumbstick to make it clear this machine is setup for gaming. The NGP is thought to have a 4.3-inch display and 2GB of on-board storage. Additional storage can be added through an SD card slot. The unit measures 170 x 72 x 15mm and includes a 2200mAh rechargeable battery. Details of the processor and RAM have not been revealed, but it’s surely going to be an ARM chip and a decent amount of RAM.Included with every unit will be 20 classic Neo-Geo titles, which also means the on-board software will include an emulator. Maybe the games will be true originals, or have updated visuals. The games that ship with the NGP include:The Art of FightingBaseball Stars ProfessionalCyber-LipFatal FuryFatal Fury SpecialFrenzyKing of MonstersLast ResortLeague BowlingMagical LordMetal SlugMutation NationNam-1975Samurai ShodownSengokuSuper SidekicksThe King of Fighters ’94Top Player’s GolfUltimate 11World HeroesFor a portable system to succeed it needs new titles to be released on a regular basis. The hardware looks too good just to be for those 20 games it ships with. The inclusion of an SD card slot also suggests SNK Playmore intend more content to be added after sale. So now we have to wait and see if this is an officially planned product, or just a leaked prototype unit than SNK shelved. I’m hoping this is a planned release and it will be supported by some kind of retro game app store (there are 158 Neo-Geo games that could be offered). At the right price I’m sure there’s a market for it.More at Famicon-Plaza.com (translated), via Kotakulast_img read more
